My cousin, who is an amazing cook, gave me this rice recipe years ago so I could learn how to make spicy rice with sausage and jalapenos. It is so flavorful and I love that it is full of onion and green peppers. The cumin makes this recipe in my opinion. Give this one a try!
How to Make Spicy Rice with Sausage & Jalapenos
- Get the rice going first. You will use Uncle Ben’s Wild Rice, the seasoning in the rice box, and beef bullion.
- Cook sausage.
- Chop and saute the onion and green peppers.
- Season the veggies with cumin and garlic powder.
- Mix all cooked ingredients above into a large bowl.
- Chop and add diced jalapenos. Add those to the bowl or serve on the side.
- Eat and enjoy!
Spicy was first introduced to me at one of our family gatherings. When I say gathering, I mean GATHERING! We might have forty or more cousins, friends, and family members at our gatherings. We always circle up, do a headcount, pray, and then dig in. It has become a fun tradition. My boys and husband loved it so much that I knew I would need to try to make it at home. I did, and it has been part of our regular meal rotation ever since.
What Does Spicy Rice Taste Like?
It is full of so much flavor. The cumin makes it. Before the boys even see it, the wonderful smell goes through the house and they know, spicy rice is cookin!
What can I eat with it?
The really nice thing about spicy rice is that you can eat it in a bowl by itself or you can eat it with chips. I will dip the tortilla chips in the rice and scoop it up or I will just crunch up the chips in it and stir them around. It is good served with corn on the cob, brussel sprouts, asparagus, or any seasonal veggie that you want to cook up.
Why you will love this recipe
It tastes really good. I love that it re-heats up nicely and makes such a large serving. You can add more of less of the veggies and it still will turn out really well.
Can I make spicy rice ahead of time?
You can definitely make this ahead of time. You could reheat it and put it in a crock pot to keep warm or just heat it up bowl for bowl.
Can you double the recipe?
To be honest, I have never doubled this recipe because it already makes so much. I don’t see why not though.

Saute the onions and green peppers in the oil or butter until tender. (10 minutes)

Chop and add in jalapenos to your liking. They are optional.
Storage or leftovers
Cover the container the rice is in and store it in the fridge. It is good in there for several days.
Tips
I like to use one mild and one hot sausage. If you want it hotter, then use two pounds of hot sausage.
You can substitute bouillon cubes for bouillon paste. If I only have chicken paste, then I will use that and it works fine.
Jalapenos are optional. We have used both fresh and the ones out of the jar. You get to decide how hot you want it.

Will definitely try this! I am unable to use the Uncle Bens flavored rice because of food sensitivity and allergies. Our family loves meals like this and I know we would love it! What seasonings would you suggest in place of the seasoning that comes in the packaged?

Understood and hope you give it a try. Here is what I found after some research. Onion and parsley flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, ground tumeric, ground cumin, ground ginger, pepper and salt can be used as a substitute. I don’t know the exact measurments, but I would say use about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of each and leave out what causes the sensitivities. Hope this helps;)
