A mother’s prayer for her son is a treasured word, woven with hope, love, and unwavering faith, guiding her son through the many stages of life. As he grows from a little boy, to a young man, and into an adult man, your whispered words carry the weight of dreams yet to be realized-a future where he thrives in his education, nurtures meaningful relationships, becomes a devoted father, and serves others with a heart full of compassion.
In a world filled with uncertainties, a mother’s prayer becomes a powerful anchor for her son’s journey through life. Your prayers cover so many aspects of his life from his success in school, his strength on the field, to his courage to follow you no matter what. When you are worried, turn to prayers. Your prayers can ask for wisdom as he navigates relationships and becomes the man who will one day be a loving husband and father. Above all, your prayers can cover him so that he learns the importance of turning to scripture, finding solace and guidance in the word of God, and carrying these prayers into his own life.
Writing these personal prayers out for you is vulnerable but God’s peace has been over me and I want to share them with you so that you can have guidance on where to start and encouragement for what to pray. There isn’t a right or wrong way, just start. The best time to plant a tree is now. Lift up your heartfelt prayer to your heavenly Father and trust in God’s plans. May God guide you each passing day as you pray for your beloved son and dive into the power of prayer.
A Mother’s Prayer for Her Son: Prayers for Their Future
Future Education (Trade, Certification, Degree, etc.)
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Lord, I don’t know what their future holds, but you do. You have created them with the exact skills, desires, and talents that will propel them in the right direction. I can see how you have been working in them all this time and I pray that they do too. Light up their path at just the right time with just the right direction so that they will see where they need to go and what they need to do. Give them the desires of your heart so that their future career will be one where they are on mission in disguise. Let it be in a field that will provide well for their family, bring them contentment, bless others, and have many opportunities.
I pray that when it is time to shift directions you will let them know ahead of time and get their heart and mind leaning in that new direction. Give them the desire to work unto You and let them be honored in their comings and goings. Provide them with the tool set they need to be the best that they can be in the field that they are in. Let others praise them and not themselves. Cultivate a strong work ethic in them that carries on until you call them home. Let them see that work is good and that you modeled that for us during creation. In the name of Jesus, amen.
Current and Future Relationships with Women
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
All Women
Lord, you created woman and said, it is good. Let them see that what you have created is good and love and respect the women in their lives. I pray that they are caretakers and enjoy being a part of the women’s lives that they are a part of. Whether it is their mom, grandma, great grandma, sister, friend, girlfriend, wife, boss, etc., help him to see them the way that you do.
Current and Future Girlfriend
I lift up their current girlfriend to you. Let their personal relationship be one that brings you honor and praise. Help them to hold each other accountable and keep them sexually pure. Help them to see that the desire to deepen their relationship is good and normal. Make it clear that certain things are perfectly created for marriage. Let them respect each other and bring out the best in one another. I pray that their relationship is a good training ground for learning how to work with others, to put others first, to communicate, and to seek you in their relationships. Let them make wise decisions and surround them with good friends and Christ centered community support.
Future Wife
You know who their future wife is and I ask for protection over her heart, mind, and body. Help her to love you with all of her heart and to have a desire for you. I pray that she loves ______ and adds to him and is the bank for his river. There to help guide and move and change with him. Let her understand him and be patient with him as we are all a work in progress. I pray that their marriage will be strong. Keep the enemy and all that would seek to harm and destroy it away. Help them to recognize your plans. Let them clearly see when it is not something that you have planned for them.
I pray that ________ realizes that she is a gift from you and a good thing. Keep his foot from harm. Help him to turn his eyes away from anything that would seek to separate the good that you have started in their relationship. Be the center of the marriage and the cornerstone in each of their lives.
Father/Dad
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Dear heavenly Father, you’re a good father! Lord, I pray that my son is a father who loves his children deeply. Keep him so close to you that there is no mistaking what the role of father looks like. I pray that he disciples his children and teaches them about you every day. Give him the desire to be the spiritual leader of the home in a way that is joyful, truthful, kind, patient, and loving. Give him the resources, tools, and relationships to give him ideas, guidance, and encouragement.
Fill him with the fruits of the Spirit and give him patience beyond measure. Let him walk with his children and not exhaust them. Give him the words to say to them to build them up. I pray that they see you through their father, which is my son. Give him a strong prayer group to be a part of. Help him as he raises his own children and let him be a guiding light in his children’s lives.
Unexpected Storms
Isaiah 43:2 “When you pass though the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
Dear God, storms and trials will come. Let his life be built on you and your unwavering foundations. You are his cornerstone and light. Let him lean into you. Be in the fire with him, just like when you were with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Part the water for him, like you did with Moses and walk him through. Give him Godly wisdom through this difficult time. Shut the mouths of lions like with Daniel in the Lion’s den. Crush the giants like you did for David. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Serving Others the Way You Do
Matthew 20:28 “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Lord, there is so much more to life than what we see from our own eyes. Give him your eyes and ears and help him to be the hands and feet of Jesus. When something seems upside down or out of place, give him the prompting to take pause. Prompt him to check and see if it is something unexpected that you have for him today. Put others in his path to serve and help him to recognize when those moments are there. Help him to see the difference to saying yes to everything and serving you. Let him know that it is ok to say no. Give him full rest every night. Restore his spirit so that he will be ready for the mission field every day. Give him a pure heart and let your face shine on him.
A Mother’s Prayer for Her Son: Prayers in Proverbs
I LOVE the book of Proverbs. If you just read one Proverb a day, you will have the book read in a month. Repeat every month to store up these words in your heart.
When I started researching for this post, I found that the first seven chapters of Proverbs start with the words, “My son”. Well, not chapter one, because it says “My son” starting in verse 8. I would love to put all seven chapters in here for you, but that is well over 202 verses. However, I want to encourage you to turn those verses into prayers for your son. There is something so powerful about praying scripture.
If you have never prayed scripture before, don’t be intimidated. You can take different Bible verses and pray them over your son’s life. There isn’t a right or a wrong. I will give you a couple of examples to hopefully get you started. God’s word is powerful.
Proverbs 4: 1 says, “Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
Here is how I would pray Proverbs 4:1
Lord, I pray that ________ listens to his father’s instruction, if it is of you. I pray that he pays attention and gains understanding.
Proverbs 1:10 says, “My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.”
Here is how I would pray Proverbs 1:10
Lord, I pray that when and if sinful men entice _______, he would not give into them.
I hope those examples help you to see that you can take scripture and turn it into a specific prayer.
A Mother’s Prayer for Her Son: Prayers for Your Son’s Athletics
Wins and Losses
Lord, I pray that as _______ plays in these games and knows that he will either come out with a win or a loss, that you grow ______ and help ______ to work as an unto you, which means loving others, putting others first, working to the best of their ability, and not quitting. Help _____ to see others the way you see the people on his team and the people on the other team. I pray that this lesson of winning and losing will carry over into other life events where sometimes we win and sometimes we lose, and that ______ learns that it is how we grow and use those experiences to glorify you.
Coaches
Lord, I lift up ______ coaches today. I ask that you put the right coaching staff with _____ so that they can model for _____ what a true athlete looks like. My request is that these coaches teach him not only the details of the sport and how to be a good teammate, but how to learn to win and lose win with humility and grace. I pray that these coaches teach him life lessons that he can line up with your truths and that they instill a lifelong love of activity in him.
I pray and hope that these coaches have a love for the players, for the sport, for learning more about it, and for each and every practice and game. Help them to feel encouraged when there is drama of any sort or discord among the parents, players, teammates or coaches. I pray for the coaches who may not know who you are Lord, help him to be a light and help them to see something different in him and wonder what that is and let it lead to you.
Injuries
Lord, I pray for _______ current injuries and I pray that you protect him from future injuries. I pray that you protect the other players from injury as well. Help him to stretch and warm up and practice and train properly to do everything in his ability to avoid injury. I pray for him as he goes out to each game; that you would protect everything from his head to his toes from being injured.
Lord, I life up the current injury that _______ is healing from. I ask that you heal every fibrous material in his body. Please bring it back together 100% stronger than it was before, and help his body to heal and mend. Lord, I pray that while he is mending this injury and sitting out and missing practice and game time, that you would protect his mind to be strong and to feel like he is still a valuable part of the team. I pray that the coaches and teammates are understanding and know just how much he wants to be practicing and playing and that this isn’t easy.
Lord, use this as an opportunity for your glory and grow ______ so that he knows that they are more than just an athlete. Injuries are tough and they can be very trying. I pray that he will have a deeper empathy and understanding for other people after having these injuries and find ways that he can support and help other players when they are hurt and injured and can’t do the things that they love.
Mindset
Lord, I pray for ______ mindset. I pray that he has the mind of Christ that he loves and sees people the way that you do. Please protect his heart and his mind as he faces the challenges that come with being an athlete. I pray that this mindset will be used for good. Let him see that these experiences are so much more than a game. Put the full armor of God on him from the shoes of peace to the helmet of salvation. Equip him with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control.
Lifelong love of activity
Lord, I pray for _______to have a lifelong love of activity. I pray that he is always active and grateful. Let him use the things that he learns to continue to find a way to be active every day. Help him to take care of the body that you’ve given him. Let him take time every day to move it and to be active. Help him to carry that love of being active over and to be able to share it with other people. Let him be reminded that he is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Help him to enjoy taking care of what you’ve blessed him with.
