I’ve dabbled with homemade brownies recipes over the years. But, the box mix seems to taste better than the homemade versions I make.
But lately, I’ve been experimenting with fresh milled grains and flours that actually bring something to the table nutritionally. I wanted something richer and more wholesome. When I tested these gluten-free buckwheat brownies, I knew immediately I had found the one. They were chocolatey, fudgy, and absolutely worth sharing — so here we are.

Why These Buckwheat Brownies Work
These buckwheat brownies taste indulgent and have a deep, rich flavor that goes perfectly with the cocoa powder and the chocolate chips. This brownie recipe is a keeper.
I love that you can just put everything in one large bowl and mix. The the brownie batter also taste delicious.

Buckwheat Flour Brownies Ingredients
Here’s everything you’ll need:
- 1 cup Arrowhead Mills buckwheat flour (gluten-free)
- 2/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/3 cups sugar
Side note: I used 1 cup sugar + 1/3 cup maple syrup, and it turned out wonderfully. - 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cup butter, melted
- 3 large eggs (at room temperature)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1 cup chocolate chips
I used mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, and they were perfect.

How to Make Buckwheat Brownies
Preheat your oven to 350°.
Grease an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking pan. You can use nonstick spray, but I usually grab a paper towel, add a little butter, and spread it all around the pan. I measured my pan and it’s 8 1/2 x 8 1/2.
In a large bowl, add all of the ingredients and mix until everything is fully combined.
Pour the batter into your prepared pan and spread it evenly.
Bake for 30 minutes, then check with a toothpick near the center. Mine came out with just a little bit on it, so I popped them back in for 2 more minutes. For my oven, 32 minutes total was perfect. Once they set up, they were absolute perfection.
We didn’t wait for them to cool. They are delicious when they are warm and gooey.
