Healthy Custard Oatmeal Made with Farm Fresh Eggs and Milk
I can’t believe I’ve lived 40 years and just now heard about custard-style oatmeal. Seriously, where has this been all my life? If you’re like me, you might be raising an eyebrow at the idea of putting eggs in your oatmeal. I get it—it sounds weird. But hear me out: this isn’t scrambled eggs in oats. This is creamy, dreamy, custard-like perfection. Think pudding, not breakfast gone wrong.

Healthy Custard Oatmeal Made with Farm Fresh Eggs and Milk
Equipment
- saucepan
- Measuring Cups and Spoons:
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup whole rolled oats
- 1 cup 2% or whole milk (for best results)
- 1 farm fresh egg (or any egg)
- dash salt
- 1/2 tbsp. butter (optional, but highly recommended)
- 3 tbsp. raw sugar or coconut sugar (you can use whatever sugar you want or substitute honey or maple syrup)
Instructions
- Whisk all ingredients in a saucepan until the egg is completely blended and all ingredients have been mixed well.
- Turn the burner on medium heat and stir constantly until it thickens. This will take around 5 minutes. It might pop a few times like it is coming to a boil and that is okay as long as you are stirring it. You don't want the milk to burn or the eggs to scramble. Yikes!
- Take it off the heat when it reaches the consistency that you like and enjoy. Top with fresh fruit if you want.
I’ve been making this oatmeal like crazy ever since I discovered it. Why? Because it’s ridiculously good, incredibly easy, and the perfect way to sneak in some extra protein. Plus, if you’ve got farm-fresh eggs and milk lying around, this is a great way to use them up. Let me tell you—this recipe is comforting, hearty, and ready in just five minutes.

The Ingredients for Creamy Custard Oatmeal
Here’s what you need:
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (whole, not quick oats—trust me on this)
- 1 cup milk (whole milk makes it extra creamy, but any milk works)
- 1 large egg (yes, the whole egg!)
- 1/2 tablespoon butter
- 3 tablespoons raw or brown sugar (or adjust to your taste—no judgment if you like it sweet)
- A dash of salt (or a couple of cranks with the salt grinder)
Optional: Add in honey or maple syrup if you’re feeling fancy.

The Method for Creating Healthy Custard Oatmeal
First things first: don’t even think about turning the burner on yet. You’ve got to whisk everything together first. Grab a small saucepan and mix up your oats, milk, egg, sugar, butter, and salt. Whisk like your life depends on it. Okay, not really. The goal is to fully incorporate that egg so there’s no separation. Smoothness is key here, folks.
Now, turn the burner to medium heat (not medium-high heat) and keep stirring. This is not the time to walk away and check your phone. Stir constantly to keep the milk from scorching and the eggs from clumping. In about five minutes, you’ll notice the mixture thickening into the most glorious custard-like oatmeal you’ve ever seen. Seriously!

Why It’s Worth the Hype
This isn’t your grandma’s oatmeal (though she’d probably love it). Custard oatmeal, or “custard oats” as TikTok might call it, is rich, creamy, and satisfying. It’s also a balanced breakfast, with carbs from the oats and protein from the egg. The whole milk adds an extra layer of indulgence, making this feel a little special—even if it only took five minutes.
And let’s be honest, we could all use some comfort food that doesn’t require a whole afternoon in the kitchen.

Tips & Variations
1. Add toppings: Think fresh fruit, a dollop of yogurt, or a drizzle of maple syrup. Want to go full dessert? Sprinkle on some chocolate chips or cinnamon sugar. Oh, or add in some peanut butter or a dash of vanilla.
2. Switch up the sweetener: If you’re not a fan of brown sugar, try honey, agave, or even stevia.
3. Experiment with milk: Grass-fed, organic, almond, oat—whatever you love, go for it.
4. Steel-cut oats? I haven’t tested it yet, but if you’re adventurous, give it a go and let me know how it turns out. I have a great crock-pot steel-cut oats recipe that I would love for you to check out! It is requested every year at Christmas.
This great recipe is definitely a step up from regular oatmeal. It’s a great recipes that’s almost like a creamy dessert with the added bonus of extra protein, thanks to the eggs. I haven’t used it with steel cut oats or quick-cooking oats, so I can’t say how that would turn out, but I really love the texture that whole rolled oats provide.
The key is making sure the egg mixture is completely broken apart and incorporated for the perfect custard-like velvety texture. It’s such a healthy breakfast option, and if you’re looking for a good way to get some extra protein into your diet, this oatmeal custard recipe is the way to go! How cute would this recipe be served in custard cups! I might have to grab some the next time I am out thrifting.
