What steps do I take to make these buttery homemade biscuits from scratch?

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  • Spray an 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Melt ½ cup butter and pour it into the greased baking dish.
  • In a medium sized mixing bowl, mix together 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder and 1 ½ teaspoons salt.
  • Mix in 1 ¾ cups buttermilk. Don’t worry if you don’t have buttermilk. You can make your own by making 1 ½ teaspoons of vinegar to 1 ¾ cup milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Stir until a nice batter forms. Make sure all dry ingredients are mixed in well.
  • Pour the batter directly on top of the butter and then take your spoon to spread it around. A lot of butter will be on the sides and over the top.
  • Take a butter knife and cut the batter into 9 squares. It seems weird to cut batter, but do your best. It will help with cutting them after they are baked.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes. Keep an eye on them. The tops will be golden brown.

What ingredients will I need to make these buttery homemade biscuits from scratch?

You may already have some of these ingredients in your kitchen. This recipe fits perfectly in an  8×8 or 9×9 baking dish. I have a glass one that I use for these biscuits. You will also need to get 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder and 1 ½ teaspoons salt. I don’t usually have buttermilk on hand, but I do have vinegar and milk. If you have these two ingredients you can make buttermilk.

What do I do if I don’t have buttermilk?

Don’t worry, if you have vinegar and milk, you can make buttermilk. Pour the 1 ¾ cup milk into a bowl that can hold that much liquid and mix in 1 ½ teaspoons of vinegar. Let it sit for five minutes. Stir it occasionally if you want to. I don’t usually do that because I am typically in a hurry trying to mix up the other ingredients. It’ll turn out fine.

What should the batter look like?

Once you mix in the buttermilk, you should not see any dry ingredients. Make sure you mix all ingredients in well. The batter will be sticky and somewhat thick. It will pour out of the mixing bowl and you can use a rubber spatula or spoon to help get the rest of the batter out of the bowl and into the baking dish.

How will I know when they are done?

You are going to bake them at 450 degrees for 25-30 minutes. They will be golden brown on the top. The butter will be bubbling up all around them. If you insert a toothpick near the middle, it will come out clean. There shouldn’t be any wet dough on the toothpick.

Why are they so fluffy?

These biscuits get their height from the baking powder. They will rise as they are baking. You can substitute self-rising flour for the all-purpose flour and baking powder if you don’t have those ingredients on hand.

Will I get full off of one biscuit or two biscuits?

It depends on how hungry you are. If you are eating them with butter and jam, you may want two biscuits. If you are using them for biscuits and gravy, one biscuit might be enough.

Are they good with butter and jam?

We love them with butter and strawberry jam. You can eat them with any type of jam or jelly. Honey also makes for a great topping.

Would these buttery homemade biscuits be good with gravy?

Absolutely! These biscuits go great with sausage gravy and chocolate gravy. While the biscuits are baking, you would have time to make the gravy. They would both be done right about the same time. It will take your right around 35-40 minutes to make a biscuit and gravy meal.

What sets this recipe apart from other biscuit recipes?

A lot of people don’t think that they have the time or ability to make homemade biscuits, and this recipe is a great way to ease into homemade biscuit making. I can’t say that they are fail proof, but they are a great place to start. The fact that you just mix up the batter and pour it into a baking dish full of melted butter, and then bake it, is very appealing. You don’t have to roll out the dough or cut the dough into circles. You can just dump and bake.

We love this recipe and I hope you will too! Give it a try and enjoy!
