  • That bacon + maple + mustard combo? So good

Ingredients

  • 1 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1–2 large onions, diced
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans pork and beans (or your favorite baked beans)
  • 6 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 6 tablespoons ketchup
  • 10 tablespoons maple syrup

How to Make Simple Southern Baked Beans

1. Preheat your oven

Set your oven to 325°F so it’s ready to go.

2. Cook the bacon

Fry your bacon until it’s nice and crispy. You can cook the strips whole and crumble them after, or cut them into small pieces before frying—whatever works best for you.

Once it’s done, transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to drain, but don’t get rid of that bacon grease—you’ll use it for the onions.

3. Sauté the onions

Add your diced onions right into the bacon grease and cook them over medium heat for about 7 minutes, until they soften and start to brown. This step adds so much flavor, so don’t rush it.

4. Mix everything together

In a large bowl, combine:

  • The cooked bacon
  • The sautéed onions (with the grease)
  • Pork and beans
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Maple syrup

Give it a good stir so everything gets evenly coated.

5. Bake

Pour the mixture into a casserole dish, cast iron skillet, or an 8×8-inch pan. Cover it, then bake for 45 to 60 minutes, until it’s hot and bubbly.

A Few Friendly Tips

  • Make it ahead: These reheat beautifully, so feel free to make them earlier in the day (or even the day before).
  • Use what you have: Any baked beans will work here—no need to overthink it.
  • Don’t skip the bacon grease: That’s where a lot of the flavor comes from. You don’t have to add it all, but it does add to the flavor.

When to Serve These

Honestly? Anytime.

They fit right in at:

  • Holiday dinners
  • Summer cookouts
  • Church potlucks
  • Weeknight meals alongside grilled chicken or burgers

Or even just when you want something cozy and familiar on the table.
