If you are looking for a Yellowstone/Grand Teton national park trip itinerary that will leave you rejuvenated and not needing a vacation after you just took a vacation you are in the right place. I will be honest, you are going to want to go back after this trip and this well planned itinerary just scrapes the surface. My goal was to take a relaxing vacation, experience the land by exploring it from within, and get to see my family light up by seeing a part of God’s creation that we hadn’t seen before.
Why I Created This Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park Trip Itinerary
My husband and I took our boys out west this summer for the first time. None of us had been west before and visiting these national parks was on our bucket list. I had been wanting to go west for a couple of years and a lot of planning went into this amazing trip. My parents were able to go with us as well and it was also their first time traveling out west. Getting to experience this “first” with everyone was very special. I still can’t get over it and I am already thinking about when we could go again.
I have discovered that travel and vacation are two very different things, but this trip combined the two into one. We like our sleep and resting on vacation is something that is important to us. It was hard to find that balance, but with a lot of strategic planning, it happened. I put a lot of time and thought into writing this Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park Trip Itinerary and after seeing it through, I think it will help a lot of people with their planning.
When I started writing this, I thought it would be easy to tell you about everything, but it is really hard to sum up all of the thoughts and details of this trip. All good, but we all know the planning can be tedious. I really hope that this helps you in your planning. I know I looked at so many posts to help me plan our trip. Blog posts, maps, and the parks themselves helped me tremendously when planning. Take what you can from this Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park Trip Itinerary and use it to help you any way you can.

Why We Made the Decisions We Did:
Day 1
Time of Year: We went in the second week of June. The weather went from snowing to the 80’s. We dressed in layers and it really was the perfect weather for hiking. It was cold the first day we landed, because it was in the low 30’s, but the temperature claimed every day. We were actually pretty thrilled to see the snow coming down and to get to see that side of things. I haven’t been during any other time, but if you are looking to go hiking and experience the summer time there, this might be the best time to go. The weather was perfect for hiking, all of the roads were clear and open, and we saw so many animals. We saw bald eagles, a baby bear, bison, herd of elk, pronghorns, a very large bull elk, and many other little critters.
Travel Specifics for Day 1
Flight: We decided to fly because it was going to be well over 24 hours to drive there. We weren’t able to extend our vacation longer due to work so we decided that flying would be our best option. That obviously added a lot to the cost of this trip. Not only did it increase the cost of the travel, but it also increased what we needed to plan for the food budget. A road trip sounded great, but it boiled down to time for us. We needed to get there the fastest way possible. We also LOVE flying. Something about those great big airplanes and the power behind them is just mind blowing to me. It was an early start and we knew we had a full day ahead of us.
Jackson Hole Airport
Airport: I chose Jackson Hole airport for two reasons. First of all, I read that it is like flying into nowhere else. Oh my goodness, they were so right! Your descent is breathtaking as you look at these mountains that are just too hard to describe. When you get off the airplane you don’t even want to walk because you just want to take in the amazing view. Before you walk through the doors to enter the airport, you go under an entryway arch made of antlers. Wow!
Jackson Hole airport is small, clean, and resembles a rustic resort. The floor to ceiling windows let you look out at the snow capped mountains that are just breathtaking. There is a restroom in the first large room you are in over toward the right. There is history to read about and a video to watch. When you walk into the next room, the rental car stations are to your right and there is seating directly in front of you.
The second reason that I chose this airport was because it was only a two hour drive north to Old Faithful Inn. I tried to map out our trip so that we wouldn’t be in the car very long. There is an airport north of Old Faithful, but between the view of Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) and the travel time, this was our best option.
Avis Car Rental
Car Rental: I will be honest here, I started calling 6 months ahead of time and there were NO vans or SUVs left at the first three rental places I called. I called Avis and they had a minivan and a large SUV. I took into account that I needed a vehicle that would comfortably hold 6 adults plus our luggage. The research on their site showed that the minivan had more trunk space than the large SUV. I was able to get a discount by paying in full ahead of time.
I highly recommend Avis, based on our experience. They were professional, easy to work with, and gave us an upfront discount. They also offered to give us a larger SUV for no additional cost, but we stuck with the minivan. Our van only had 800 miles on it and smelled brand new. It was spotless and drove great. They asked me if I would like to pay for the gas fill up at the end when I was checking in or if I would like to fill up at the end of our trip. We decided to fill up at the end of the trip and return it with a full tank. I did also add on their insurance, which was an unexpected cost. I haven’t done any research on how that works. At the time, I figured we better get their insurance, just in case.
Food Planning
Food: If we would have driven, we would have packed food and drinks. Since we flew, we only packed snacks and our refillable water bottles. We budgeted accordingly and knew that we would be eating out for a lot of meals.
What I didn’t know is that it would be every meal. I fully expected to pass a small grocery store along the way and there weren’t any. We didn’t even pass any small towns! Now, there were some general stores, which were adorable! They had snacks, souvenirs, food grills, ice cream, and more. I knew that food was more expensive there based on prior research and it was. Make room in your budget for that ahead of time. Now, if you drive, you can pack a cooler and stock up on some food items. I saw plenty of families eating yogurts, cereal cups, fruits, and other food items that they packed. The original plan was to get some bars and breakfast items to eliminate eating out for at least one meal of the day, but that didn’t happen. No biggie, now we know.
Afternoon Agenda
The Drive: Oh my goodness, no telephone poles, no restaurants, stores, or even houses! We couldn’t get over it. Cell phone service was very spotty as well. The drive alone was just amazing. Even though we were tired from getting up so early, we didn’t want to close our eyes, because we were afraid we would miss something. Absolutely amazing! You will find that there are several places to pull over and take in the view. Just go with the flow and pull over when you want to. Enjoy the drive and the view. Don’t rush and don’t expect anyone else to rush. You are going to pass the Continental Divide so make sure you pull over and get a picture.
Bathroom and Food Stop: We planned on stopping pretty soon into the drive to eat, but we didn’t see any places to pull over and stop. A pizza place at Coulter Bay was recommended to us when we were buying our National Park pass, but we never did see the signs for it. Just know that if you don’t stop there, it will be about an hour and a half before you get to the next stop.
We stopped at the first place we saw, which was Grant Village General Store. We were really hungry and ready for a bathroom break, so we whipped into the parking lot, jumped out, and went in speedy quick. Again, the food was expensive and they were out of a lot. The grilled cheese was good. I purchased a loaf of cinnamon bread to have as a snack. It was a nice treat. The boys got ice cream and said it was really good. I don’t remember what everyone else got, but it was good, not great and not bad.
Staying at Old Faithful Inn
Old Faithful Inn: I chose to book here because we wouldn’t have to leave and reenter the park each day and there isn’t any other place like it. Old Faithful Inn is the largest log cabin structure in the world. It just feels like you are taking a step back in time. It has an iconic red front door and a crow’s nest that leads to the top of the structure for the flag lowering and raising. The crows nest is closed to the public. If you are lucky or plan ahead, you can possibly schedule a visit up with the bellhop. The craftsmanship and beauty is impressive.
Upon entering the Inn you are greeted with live music, chatter, people visiting and rocking away. Each floor overlooks the entry way and there are chairs and rocking chairs that go all the way around it. You can sit and read, people watch, enjoy a drink from the cafe, or visit with your family or new acquaintance. There are tables around the outer edges. Some people were playing cards, others were writing letters, and some were just sitting there enjoying the view.
Old Faithful Inn Rooms
The rooms are so unique and we stayed in the original part of the inn. It is unforgettable. Each room has a sink with copper faucets, a quilted bed, open windows to let in the fresh air, and a dresser. There are robes hanging in the rooms for you to slip on and go to the shared restrooms. Your room has towels and rags under the sink as well. The showers are very private and clean. You don’t have to worry about shampoo, conditioner, or body wash. They provide all of that in the shower for you. The bathrooms are scattered throughout the hallways so you don’t have to walk far to take a shower or use the restroom. I loved the experience.
Booking Tip
I booked seven months in advance and got three of the last five rooms available. Book early!
Evening Agenda
Dinner: We had dinner in the Old Faithful Dining Room that evening. I made reservations to eat there about a month before our trip. The food is expensive and could use some improvements. I had read reviews about the food here and that is the general consensus. We ate there both nights of our stay. Some of us had the buffet and some had entrees.
I would recommend eating dinner in the general store that is to the right of the Inn when facing it. It is called the Old Faithful Basin Store. There is another general store in the back, but this one has the diner in it. They had an amazing grill and food. We discovered it on our last day and it was too late then. We ate breakfast there and the food was excellent. You can sit at the bar stools like in an old diner. They closed early so if you plan to eat there for dinner, you need to make sure you are back from your hiking in time so that they aren’t closed when you get back.
Exploration
Activities: We walked around the boardwalk out front and took in the views of the geysers, pools, and springs that were all around Old Faithful Inn. We of course watched Old Faithful erupt and it was crazy! The fact that something erupts from the earth like clockwork and shoots so high into the sky is just amazing. You can just walk a short distance or make longer loops around. You have options based on how much time you have.
We also visited the Visitor Center to get some information about trails and safety. They have a really nice center and the workers were more than helpful.
Evening: We treated ourselves to some ice cream in the little snack shop that is to the right when you first walk into the inn and called it a night. It is called the Bear Paw Deli. We were tired from getting up so early and ready for bed. It stays light there until pretty late, so when we went to bed each night, it was still light outside.
Important:
- Think about how much luggage space your rental car will hold and plan accordingly. We each had a carry on and a few of us had a small backpack.
- Book early if you want to stay in the park. You may need to book up to a year in advance to stay inside of Yellowstone.
- Budget for food.

Why We Made the Decisions We Did:
Day 2
Good morning to us! There was a bison right outside the front entrance of the inn when we walked outside. What in the world!! He was just munching away and minding his own business. We couldn’t get over it. There were several bison out that morning.
Early Morning Surprise
We slept with our windows open and at about 4:00 am I woke up to the sounds of coyotes howling in the not so far distance. I actually thought it was wolves at first and I was really hoping to see a wolf from a distance while we were there. I looked out the window hoping I could see their pack running through, but couldn’t. It was light enough, but I just saw the steam covering the land. That view alone was worth staying up and just looking out the window for a bit. I also got to see Old Faithful erupt in the early morning so that was pretty cool.
Morning Agenda at Old Faithful
Breakfast: We had a later breakfast time because we wanted to sleep in and take our time. We have teenagers so we wanted them to be able to sleep in as well. We wandered around the Inn and visited the gift shop that was inside of it. There are also local artists or authors who set up their artwork and books when you walk in the front entrance. They had some paintings and pictures of the local wildlife. Very talented people!
The boys decided to have the Old Faithful Inn Dining Room Buffet for breakfast. They said it was good. My husband and I went into the deli and grabbed food there. There are items already made in a case that you can grab and walk up to the counter and pay for. He got a breakfast sandwich and coffee and I got a fruit and yogurt parfait. They were both good. You can buy sandwiches and snacks to take on your hikes with you. We planned our day so that we would be back for lunch, but packing food is also an option.
Bear Spray
Bear Spray Rental: There is a yurt located behind Old Faithful. It looks like a large circular tent. It is within walking distance from the inn. You can rent bear spray there and then drop it off at any of the designated locations. You will sign some papers, pay the rental fee ($60 when we were there), and then watch an informational video. I was already on edge about the bears, but watching this video about black bears and grizzly bears made me even more alert. We rented two for our group of six. They recommend one per person and to always stay in groups of three. We were always together, so it worked out for our group.
Hiking the Old Faithful Overlook
Exploration: The Old Faithful Overlook is just that, an amazing overlook. It takes you up to a high point and you can look over at the Lower Basin, boardwalk, Old Faithful Geyser, and the Old Faithful Inn. It was a perfect hike for the morning. There were other people hiking it, which made me feel safer, because there had been recent bear sightings on this trail. The visitor center said not to hike it late in the day or early if you want to reduce the chance of surprising a bear.
My parents are healthy and in their lower 60’s and they did great with this hike. Once we got to the top, we sat and looked out for a long while. There were some chipmunks who were very interested in the boys and their protein bar that they were snacking on. We also spotted an eagles nest with eagles in it. We had binoculars so that helped us to get a better view. The view was beautiful!
Afternoon Agenda
Lunch: We grabbed some sandwiches at the Bear Paw Deli for lunch. They had a delicious hummus wrap. You could try out the general store lunch too. At this time, we didn’t know it existed.
Exploration: Mystic Falls was on the agenda for the afternoon. We drove 6 minutes to get there. You can walk to the trail head, but that will add 2 more miles to your hike. We wanted to save our energy for the actual Mystic Falls trail, and I am glad we did. This hike was tougher than the Overlook and had some difficult spots along the way. We went up the more challenging way and came down on the easier side. This wasn’t intentional, but I was so glad it worked out that way. Going up a steep slope is way easier than coming down a steep slope.
The views were amazing and I couldn’t get over just how beautiful it was. I didn’t want to leave this area. Once we descended and went a little ways past the base of the falls, we sat by the creek and just relaxed. Again, it was hard to leave the beauty that surrounded us. We saw several prairie dogs along this path. They were pretty entertaining to watch.
Evening Agenda
Dinner: I had made reservations for dinner at the Old Faithful Inn Dining Room again. The reservation was for 5:30 and that time worked well for us. It gave us time to hike beforehand, eat and rest, and then take in a little bit more of the scenery within walking distance before calling it a night.
Evening: We walked the property a little more that evening and went to the two different general stores located within walking distance. I discovered these delicious chocolates there. There was a whole line of goodies made with these huckleberries. They have to be handpicked from the wild and can’t just be manufactured. They had syrups, marshmallows, chocolates, jams, and so much more. The packaging was purple. You won’t miss them if you stop in. They were three for a dollar and were a nice treat.
We grabbed some drinks from the cafe and sat out in the rocking chairs on the upper deck for a while. We just talked and I caught up on some reading. I thought I would be reading a lot, but I did not want to take my eyes away from the scenery at all. We had walked quite a bit that day and we were ready to get some rest. We went to bed pretty soon after.
Important:
- Pack plenty of water.
- Pack protein or snack bars.
- Rent bear spray and keep it where you can easily reach it.
- Where proper hiking clothing, shoes, and socks.
- Stay on the trails and follow the National Park rules and guidelines.

Why We Made the Decisions We Did:
Day 3
Morning Agenda
Breakfast: We were so excited to find the little diner in the general store. It was absolutely delicious and I could have seen us eating all of our meals there if we would have known about it sooner. It was called the Old Faithful Basin General Store. They did close earlier than we got back from our hikes, so I guess that maybe we wouldn’t have had dinner there because of the time. The food was so good and they made it fresh right there in front of you. The pancakes were really good and the serving sizes were huge. We all sat up at the bar and I loved just the experience of it. It’s not very often that you get to sit in an old fashioned looking diner.
Hiking the Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook
Exploration: The Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook was about a 12 minute drive from the Old Faithful Inn. There were a lot of people there. We also saw several bison bedded down in the field outfront. There are two viewing sites for the Grand Prismatic. The first one is from the bottom and it is a shorter walk that is flat. The second one is the overlook and that is the one we chose. We wanted to see it from above. It wasn’t a difficult hike, but it was a steady incline that made for a good walk. The colors of the spring were absolutely crazy! God created all of these things for us to enjoy, just out in the middle of nowhere.
Afternoon Agenda
Departure: We didn’t want to feel rushed on our drive back to the Grand Tetons and we didn’t want to be late for our dinner cruise, so we set out in plenty of time. We enjoyed the drive out and stopped at a couple of overlooks for views and pictures. Just pull over at any that you want to and enjoy the view. It was about an hour and a half drive from the Old Faithful Inn to Colter Bay Village.
Colter Bay Arrival: We arrived before our check in time so we went to the General Store. This general store had a lot of good options for campers. We settled on ice cream cones and then walked down to the maria where we were stopped in our tracks by the view. I can not put into words how beautiful the Grand Tetons are.
Colter Bay Room: We decided to stay here because it was centrally located in the Grand Tetons. The history of the cabins was very cool. We chose the two bedroom cabin. Each room had two beds in it. There was a drop zone and restroom when you first walked in through the front door and the rooms were on the sides. It was very clean and we all slept great here. The staff at check in was helpful and friendly.
Evening Agenda
Elk Island Dinner Cruise: The dinner was delicious and the cruise was educational and fun. We had to arrive at 4:45 for the cruise. We loaded two boats and set off on Jackson Lake towards Elk Island. Our captain and guide did a fantastic job and we learned so much about the area. I didn’t know if we would like a guided tour, but it was fantastic. We came in on one side of the island and left the other way so that we would be able to see everything on our boat ride.
The view was incredible and eating on the island was a once in a lifetime experience. We had locally sourced salmon and steak. I was really impressed with the assortment of sides. They served fried potatoes, corn bread, and more. They made a homemade chocolate cake with icing for dessert. You could top it with berries and whipped cream. They prepared everything on the island and it was all you could eat. We had time to explore and hike to the top to look out over the water and mountains. We were hoping to see some mountain goats, but no luck there. I highly recommend this experience.
Hiking the Lakeshore Trail
After Dinner Exploration: Once we got back to the marina, we hiked a loop that went along the pond. It was called the Lakeshore Trail. It was a flat trail and we were able to see a beautiful sunset from one area of the hike.
Bedtime: We were pooped and ready for bed.
Important:
- You can buy bug spray at the marina and you will want it.
- Make sure you have your bear spray with you when hiking.
- Give yourself plenty of time to travel and take in the views along the way. No one is in a rush and you won’t want to be either.
Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park Trip Itinerary
Day 4
9:40 am: Depart For Jackson Lake Lodge
10:30 am: Check in for the Scenic Floating Raft & Lunch (Lower Lobby of Jackson Lake Lodge)
11:00 am: 30 minute drive to the shore lunch and raft launch

4:00 pm: Return to Colter Bay
5:00 pm: Dinner at John Colter’s Ranch House: Pizza Side
6:30 pm: Hike Heron Pond Swan Lake Trail
9:30 pm: Turn in for the night
Why We Made the Decisions We Did:
Day 4
Breakfast: We grabbed a couple small items from the general store for breakfast because we knew we would be having a huge lunch in just a few hours.
Travel to Jackson Lake Lodge: We didn’t want to rush and you never know what you are going to see along the way. It was only a 15 minute drive but we gave ourselves plenty of time.
Jackson Lake Lodge: This was where we had to check in for our rafting trip. This lodge was something! There were shops, food, and event rooms here. A wedding was taking place that day and we could see all the guests walking around. There are also places to stay here. When you walk up the stairs, you are greeted with floor to ceiling windows and the Grand Tetons displayed in all their glory. Wow!
Afternoon Agenda
Scenic Floating Raft & Lunch: This was so fun! We got in a couple of vans and took off toward Snake River. They were cooking a shore lunch for us and once again, it was all you could eat. They served hot dogs, hamburgers, slaw, baked beans, fruit, and more. The cookies and brownies were bigger than my hand! Huge!!!
You don’t get wet and you don’t need to wear water clothes or shoes for this rafting trip. The raft is huge and the guide is stearing from the middle. Our guide was great and gave us all kinds of information along the way. It is a really relaxing float trip and a great way to see another part of the land. We traveled down through ten miles of beautiful terrain. I highly recommend this raft trip. You can get it with or without the lunch, but the lunch was pretty dog gone good. We would definitely do the lunch and raft combo again.
Jackson Lake Lodge: We spent about another hour here where we got back just looking around.
Evening Agenda
Dinner: We had dinner at John Colter’s Ranch House. There are two different restaurants in this building. We had heard about how good the pizza was so we chose that side. Oh my goodness! The pizzas were huge and so good. They had a brick oven and made them right there. It was a great place for dinner.
Hiking the Heron Pond Swan Lake Trail
Exploration: We hiked the Heron Pond Swan Lake Trail after dinner. We needed about thirty more minutes to complete this hike. The sun was setting and we wanted to make sure we were back before dark. Once again, we were in awe from the many viewpoints that we encountered along the way.
Bedtime: We went back to the cabin and settled in for the night.
Important:
- Grab an extra cookie and brownie for snacking on later. You’ll be craving them, because they are so good.
- Give yourself plenty of time to hike Heron Pond Swan Lake Trail. We were disappointed that we weren’t able to make it all the way around.
- Make sure you have sunscreen, a hat, and sun shirts for the rafting trip. You are going to be on the water for a while and you don’t want to get burnt.
Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park Trip Itinerary
Day 5
10:30 am: Breakfast from the cafe in the general store or you can eat at John Colter’s Ranch House.
11:00 am: Check Out of Colter Bay Village
One thing that we didn’t have time for was hiking Jenny Lake Hidden Falls. It was a six mileish loop and we couldn’t fit it in. If we could have gotten up really early the last day, we could have made it work. If you have extra time or any extra days, I would fit in that hike and make sure you make it to the inspiration point.
That concluded the Yellowstone/Grand Teton portion of our trip, but we weren’t done yet. We traveled down to Park City, Utah, where we stayed with family for a night. It was great to catch up and see them. They fixed us a wonderful dinner and made us feel right at home.
Bonus Travel Tips: Park City, Utah
The next day, we headed out to the Homestead Resort. There were several historic buildings on site. The main attraction here was The Crater. We swam in The Crater and did a scuba diving experience. The water was 90 degrees in there! The crater is in the middle of the land and it feels like you are swimming inside of a volcano. The walls engulf you and there is a hole at the top where you can look up and see outside. The rest is like a cave. Super cool! The rooms were brand new and the creamery was delicious. The homemade ice cream was so good!
We finished up our trip by fly fishing on the Provo River. What an experience that was! The water was beautiful and the trout were even more beautiful. Their colors shone brightly when you got them out in the sun and they were almost impossible to see when they were in the water.
We departed from Salt Lake City International Airport. It was the closest airport to our location. We had an early afternoon flight so we didn’t have to rush out that morning. It was such a great trip!
Final Thoughts on our Yellowstone/Grand Teton Trip Itinerary
This itinerary worked great for the teenagers, the grandparents, and the parents. It was the perfect combination of being relaxed, yet worn out, from some good exploration at the same time. We got to travel some of the most amazing hiking trails and we saw spectacular views. We never felt rushed and we were able to thoroughly enjoy what we did. There is so much to see out there and this just barely skims the surface, but we were able to explore miles and miles of land and enjoyed every moment. I am blown away by how much natural beauty and natural wonders are found right here in the United States. We were full of gratitude and in total awe of what the good Lord created. Wow!
If you haven’t been out west or are trying to figure out how to do this trip, I really hope this itinerary helps you out! Enjoy!

You’re very welcome!

This is an excellent, detailed itinerary. This is my neck of the woods and everything you covered was spot on, from a food budget to bear spray! Wyoming and Montana have a way of slowing you down and gives an opportunity to take advantage of everyday (you never know what the weather will do!). This post is super helpful to someone looking to book this trip. Well done!

Thank you so much! Those words mean a lot!! We absolutely loved it out there and I just hope this helps people to not feel so overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. I can’t wait to go back.
