Grandma's Old Fashioned Buttermilk Pancakes

This recipe for Grandma's Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pancakes is everything breakfast dreams are made of - fluffy, golden, and made completely from scratch.
Prep Time 8 minutes
Course: Breakfast

Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 ½ tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tbsp white granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 3 tbsp butter (melted)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup sourdough discard (optional)

Equipment

  • electric griddle or non-stick pan

Method

  1. Mix together 1 ½ cups all purpose flour, 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, and ¼ teaspoon salt in a medium sized mixing bowl.
  2. Add in 1 ½ cup buttermilk (or milk of your choice), 3 tablespoons melted butter, 1 egg, and ½ cup sourdough discard (optional).
  3. Stir until combined.
  4. Add more milk a little at a time if you like thinner pancakes.
  5. Heat the griddle over medium heat (300°).
  6. Spread butter over the top of the griddle or spray with a non-stick spray.
  7. Pour batter on the griddle and heat until bubbles are formed. You can use a ¼-½ measuring cup to help you get equal sized pancakes.
  8. Once you can see several bubbles, they are ready to flip.
  9. Flip the pancakes over and cook for about 30 more seconds.
  10. Take them off the griddle and serve warm.
  11. You can top them with syrup, berries, butter, powdered sugar, or honey.

Notes

If you don't have buttermilk, you can put 1 ½ tsp. of vinegar into 1½ cups of regular milk, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then use it. You can also just substitute the milk of your choice for the buttermilk.
