Caramel Apple Bread with Applesauce and Fresh Apples

Caramel apple bread with applesauce is the sweet bread you’ll want to bake on a cozy fall day. It’s moist, full of warm spices, and topped with the most irresistible caramel apple icing. This apple bread recipe is simple to make, even if you’re a beginner. The juicy apples blend in perfectly and taste like fall.

Ingredients
  

Caramel Apple Bread (wet ingredients)
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce (smooth and room temperature)
  • ½ cup white granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Caramel Apple Bread (dry ingredients)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 cup finely diced apples (peeled and cored-I like Granny Smith)
Caramel Apple Icing
  • 5 tbsp. melted butter
  • 3 tbsp. caramel ice cream topping
  • cups powdered sugar (added ½ cup at a time)
  • dash of salt

Method
 

  1. Grease your 9 x 5 inch loaf pan with softened butter or a cooking spray.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°.
Caramel Apple Bread
  1. In a large bowl, mix together the applesauce, granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. I just do this by hand. Whisk until well blended.

  2. Add in the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir just until combined. If you stir too much, your bread might go flat while baking.

  3. Gently fold in the 1 cup of finely diced apples. (about 1 apple)
  4. Put the batter into your prepared loaf pan.

  5. Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick or knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

  6. Take it out of the oven and let it cool in the pan for 15 minutes on a wire rack.
  7. Take the loaf out of the pan and let it cool for 30 minutes on a wire rack.

Caramel Apple Icing
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together the melted butter, caramel topping, and dash of salt.
  2. Add in the powdered sugar ½ cup at a time and mix well after each addition. This is a thick icing. I don't mix it together until the bread is cool, because it gets too thick. If that happens, just pop it in the microwave for about 20 seconds to soften it a bit for easier spreading.

  3. I like to make extra icing to serve with each piece, plus a little drizzle of the caramel topping.
