Super Easy Loaded Protein Balls With Chia Seeds
If you’re looking for an easy, no-bake snack that’s packed with wholesome ingredients, these loaded protein balls are one of those recipes you’ll want to keep tucked away.
This recipe actually has a little family history behind it.
My mom found it years ago, and I tucked the recipe away in my little recipe box. You know the kind—the box that’s full of handwritten recipes, family favorites, and recipes you haven’t made in years but can’t bring yourself to throw away.
Recently, my son’s girlfriend started making protein balls, and it reminded me of this recipe.
So I pulled out my recipe box and made them again.
And I have to tell you, I had completely forgotten how good they are!
They’re chewy, slightly sweet, full of texture, and loaded with ingredients like oats, coconut, peanut butter, flaxseed, chia seeds, and chocolate chips.
And here’s the funny part.
When I pulled the recipe card out, I discovered that I had written another protein ball recipe on the back!
So apparently I’ve been collecting protein ball recipes for years without even realizing it.
I’ll share that second recipe in another post because it’s a little simpler and has fewer ingredients. But for today, let’s make these loaded protein balls.

Easy Loaded Protein Balls with Chia Seeds

- Combine all of the ingredients in a large bowl. Stir until combined.1 cup old fashioned oats, 1 cup unsweetened coconut, ½ cup ground flax seed, ¼ cup chia seeds, 1-2 cups chocolate chips (mini, dark, whatever you prefer), 1 cup crunchy natural peanut butter (give it a good stir), ⅓ cup honey, 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
- Roll the chilled mixture into balls.
- Place the protein balls in an airtight container or baggie and store in the refrigerator.
Why You’ll Love These Protein Balls
These are the kind of snack I love having in the refrigerator.
They’re:
- No-bake
- Quick and easy to make
- Made with simple ingredients
- Easy to grab for a snack or quick breakfast
- Naturally sweetened with honey
- Packed with oats, seeds, peanut butter, and coconut
- Easy to customize with your favorite chocolate chips
They’re also a great little snack to make ahead of time. Once they’re rolled into balls, just tuck them into an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator.
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make these loaded protein balls:
Old-fashioned oats: These give the protein balls their chewy texture and make them hearty and satisfying.
Unsweetened coconut: I love the texture and flavor coconut adds to these.
Crunchy peanut butter: I like using a natural, high-quality peanut butter. The crunchy variety adds a little extra texture, but creamy would work, too.
Vanilla: Just a teaspoon adds a little extra flavor.
Honey: This gives the protein balls their natural sweetness while also helping everything stick together.
Ground flaxseed: An easy way to add some extra nutrition and texture.
Chia seeds: These tiny seeds add even more texture and make these feel like a substantial snack.
Chocolate chips: This is where you can have a little fun. Use anywhere from 1 to 2 cups depending on how chocolatey you want them. Mini chocolate chips work really well, and I personally love using dark chocolate.

How to Make Loaded Protein Balls
The best part of this recipe?
There’s no baking involved.
Start by adding all of your ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
Give everything a really good stir until it’s well combined.
You may need to use a little elbow grease here because the peanut butter and honey can make the mixture thick.
Once everything is mixed together, place the bowl in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes.
This little bit of chilling time makes the mixture much easier to roll.
After 20 minutes, scoop out portions of the mixture and roll them between your hands to form balls.
I don’t worry about making them perfectly uniform. These are homemade protein balls, after all!
Place the finished protein balls into an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator.
Then they’re ready whenever you need a quick snack.
A Few Simple Tips
Use natural peanut butter
I prefer a natural, high-quality peanut butter for this recipe. Just keep in mind that natural peanut butter can separate, so give it a good stir before measuring.
Adjust the chocolate chips
The original recipe calls for 1 to 2 cups of chocolate chips, and that’s a pretty big range.
But honestly, that’s part of the fun.
If you want them less sweet, use closer to 1 cup.
If you’re a chocolate lover, go for the full 2 cups!
Mini chocolate chips are especially nice because they distribute throughout the mixture really well.
Let the mixture chill
Don’t skip the 20-minute refrigeration step.
The mixture is much easier to work with once it’s chilled.
How to Store Protein Balls
Keep your protein balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
I love having them ready to grab when I need something quick. My husband prefers the simpler version of protein balls that I make, but I love the loaded ones more. The other ones have more of a cookie dough vibe, which is also delicious, but I love the texture of these.
They’re especially handy for busy mornings, an afternoon snack, or something to eat before or after a workout.
A Family Recipe Worth Pulling Back Out
I love recipes like this.
Not because they’re fancy.
Not because they require a bunch of special ingredients.
But because they remind me of people and seasons of life.
My mom found this recipe years ago, and it sat tucked away in my recipe box for all this time.
It took my son’s girlfriend making protein balls to remind me that I had this one.
And when I pulled it out, I discovered that little bonus recipe written on the back!
Sometimes the best recipes are hiding right there in our own kitchens.
So if you have a recipe box tucked away somewhere, maybe pull it out.
You never know what you’ll find.
And if you make these loaded protein balls, I hope they become one of those simple recipes that you make again and again.
