What to do When the Joy of Homemaking Is Gone
Some days, homemaking feels heavy. You wake up, do the dishes, and still feel empty. But the work you do has purpose—and the joy of homemaking can return. Here are 7 scripture-based ways to help you find delight in your home again, with real, simple steps to use today.

So…What to Do When the Joy of Homemaking Is Gone
We all have those seasons.
The dishes never end. The laundry multiplies. The kids are wild. And honestly, by the end of the day, you’re left wondering if joyful homemaking is even possible anymore.
If you’re in that spot, friend, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, too.
When everyday life feels like a blur of household chores, it’s easy to lose sight of the most important thing—why you’re doing it all in the first place. But the good news? Joy can return. Sometimes it just takes a few simple shifts in our perspective and our routine.
Let’s walk through some practical ways to find joy again—right in the middle of the mess.

1. Reconnect With Purpose to Find True Joy
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
When homemaking becomes a list of never-ending tasks, it’s time to hit pause.
Write down your mission statement—a simple reminder of why you take care of your family and home. Maybe it’s: To create a cozy space where my family feels safe, loved, and pointed toward Jesus.
Post it where you’ll see it during your morning routine. Let it reframe the hard work you’re doing. Because even the simple task of wiping counters can become worship when you do it for His glory.

2. Celebrate the Small Wins
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” – Hebrews 12:1
Don’t wait for the whole house to sparkle before you feel accomplished.
Did you cross off a few things from your daily to-do list? That’s a win.
Did you resist the scroll on social media and spend five extra minutes spending time with your kids? Another win.
Small victories build momentum. They remind us that little things really do matter. You can find good things in the every day mundane task.

3. Invite God Into the Mundane
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” – Colossians 3:23
Here’s the truth: God’s Word isn’t just for quiet time. It’s for dish duty, diaper changes, and dinner prep too.
Talk to Him while folding laundry. Play worship music during your household tasks. Ask Him to renew your heart while scrubbing toilets.
Joyful homemaking starts when we stop seeing chores as separate from faith. Make your homemaking tasks part of your worship.

4. Create Space for Rest
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” – Exodus 20:8
You weren’t created to hustle nonstop.
Taking time to rest isn’t lazy. It’s obedience. It’s life-giving.
Block out 15-20 minutes to read one of your favorite books, take a walk, or just breathe. Create a rhythm that includes slowing down.
Because rest restores perspective—and perspective fuels joy. Believe it or not, you can even find rest when you have young children. Make them a part of your rest. There is nothing like a great children’s book and snuggling up with your littles.

5. Connect With a Friend
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17
Isolation is joy’s biggest enemy.
Text a friend or family member. Send a voice message. Invite someone over, even if your house isn’t picture-perfect.
Other Christian women are walking their own homemaking journeys, too. Let’s stop pretending we have it all together and start cheering each other on.
Community is a good idea, always.

6. Declutter One Area
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace…” – 1 Corinthians 14:33
Visual clutter leads to mental clutter.
Start with one drawer. Or one shelf. Or that one corner that’s been driving you crazy. Then, create simple tasks to keep it tidy.
Simple things like a tidy space can create a cozy feel in your home and help you feel more in control of your day.
Flexible order brings peace. Peace makes room for joy.

7. Speak Life Over Your Home
“The soothing tongue is a tree of life…” – Proverbs 15:4
Watch your words.
Not just toward your family members, but also toward your home and your tasks.
Say things like, “This space is a blessing,” or “I get to take care of my family today.”
Your words shape your atmosphere. A positive attitude can shift the whole tone of your household.

Bonus Tip: Slow Down to Restore Joy
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
You don’t have to do everything today.
You don’t need to have the perfect good routine or the cleanest kitchen.
Some days, the most important thing is to just be still and breathe. It doesn’t mean you just sit there though. You can find rest in the every day tasks when you shift your mindset.
Let God remind you that you are not alone in this.
He sees the hard work. He values your heart. And He’s not asking you to rush—He’s inviting you to abide.
Time to Be a Doer
Joy doesn’t magically reappear—but it can return.
Start small. Choose one of these practical tips and take action today.
Not because you need to add another thing to your plate—but because your heart matters. Your home matters. And your role in this season, no matter how mundane it may feel, has eternal value.
So whether it’s Monday morning or Thursday night… when the to-do list is long, the kids are wild, and your heart feels heavy—remember:
You are not failing. You are planting seeds of peace in the soil of ordinary life.
Joy is closer than you think!
With renewed joy,
