How to Hear God’s Voice: 3 Truths You Might Be Missing
Have you ever felt like you’re praying… but not hearing anything back?
Like maybe God is quiet? Or maybe you’re just missing something?
You’re not the only one.
But I really believe we can learn to recognize God’s voice more clearly.
It takes time. It takes trust. And it takes a willing heart.
Let’s talk about what helps—and what hinders—when it comes to hearing Him.

God Is Speaking. Are You Listening?
Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me.”
That tells us two things right away:
1. God is speaking.
2. His people can hear Him.
So the issue might not be God’s silence.
It might be our volume.
Or our distraction.
Or our hesitation to obey what we already know.

God Confides in Those Who Fear Him
Psalm 25:14 says, “The Lord confides in those who fear Him.”
That’s a powerful verse.
God shares His heart with those who honor Him.
Not fear as in terror, but fear as in deep respect. Awe. Reverence.
Friendship with God starts there.
Want to hear God’s voice?
Start by taking Him seriously.
Start by drawing near.

Three Essentials for Hearing God’s Voice
Let’s look at three things that can help us tune in:
1. Prayer Isn’t Just Talking
We often come to God with lists.
We talk. We unload. We ask.
But then we rush off before we listen.
Prayer is also stillness.
It’s silence.
It’s the posture of, “Speak, Lord. I’m listening.”
2. Stillness Makes Room
Life is loud.
Kids, phones, errands, expectations.
Stillness doesn’t come naturally.
But God often speaks in whispers.
And whispers require quiet.
Stillness isn’t wasted time—it’s sacred space.
3. Stop the Tug-of-War
Are you fighting God without realizing it?
Do you find yourself saying, “Lord, I trust You… but let me try it this way first”?
We all do it.
But surrender brings clarity.
Stop pulling. Start yielding.

Breaking Down John 14:21
This verse is full of layers. Jesus said:
“The one who has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father. I will love him and reveal Myself to him.”
Let’s break it down:
• Do you know His commands?
You can’t keep what you don’t know.
• Are you keeping them?
Obedience isn’t optional if you want clarity.
• Do you love Him?
Jesus says that love = obedience.
• Are you seeing Him reveal Himself to you?
If not, check the first three steps.
It’s a cause and effect.
Like we learned in school: If this, then that.

What’s Blocking You from Hearing Him?
Sometimes we say we want to hear God…
But deep down, we know we’re not really listening.
Let’s be honest:
• Are you afraid of what He’ll ask you to do?
• Are you holding on to control?
• Are you worried about what others will think?
• Do you feel unworthy to be used by Him?
• Are you simply too busy chasing your own plans?
These things build walls.
Not because God moves away.
But because our hearts do.

How to Know If It’s Really God Speaking
So how do we know it’s Him?
Here’s what I look for:
• It will never contradict Scripture.
• It won’t produce fear, pride, or confusion.
• It will reflect His character and His promises.
Think of a bank teller.
They don’t study counterfeit money.
They study real money—until they know the feel of it.
That’s how we grow in discernment.
We spend time with God.
We stay in His Word.
We get familiar with what’s true.
Then, the false becomes obvious.

Are You Ready to Say Yes?
Here’s the hard question:
When you hear God’s voice… are you ready to say yes?
Because if not, you might stop hearing Him clearly.
Not because He stops speaking.
But because your heart isn’t ready to respond.
He doesn’t need perfection.
But He desires availability.
He wants a heart that says, “Whatever You say, Lord, I’m listening—and I’ll follow.”

Want to Hear the Voice of God More Clearly? Start Here:
• Quiet the noise.
• Open your Bible. Be ready to hear from God’s word.
• Obey what you already know.
• Trust Him to speak. Listen to the Spirit of Truth.
• Be willing to say yes.

God Still Speaks: Recognizing His Voice in Daily Life
Dear friend, if you’re longing to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in your daily life, you’re not alone. Many believers wonder if the Spirit of God is truly leading them — or if it’s just their own thoughts. The truth is, God’s guidance often comes in various ways. Sometimes through Scripture, sometimes through wise counsel, and sometimes in a small voice that nudges us gently when we’re still and paying attention.
When facing a big decision, don’t rush. Invite your Heavenly Father into the moment. Seek out the Word of God, not just for answers, but to know the Author Himself. Jesus Christ promised the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth (John 16:13), and He does — just maybe not always how we expect.

A Practical Way to Discern God’s Leading
One practical way to grow in recognizing God’s leading is to ask: Does this align with the character of Christ Jesus? God won’t contradict Himself. He won’t speak something today that opposes what He’s already said in the Old Testament or New.
Another helpful question: Would this bring the Good News to others? God often moves us in ways that serve, love, and uplift. Be careful not to lean solely on human wisdom when seeking direction. God’s answers are better, deeper, and sometimes surprising.
Sometimes we seek an audible voice, but often, the voice of God is quieter. Still. It doesn’t compete. It invites. That’s why stillness matters so much.
Guarding Against Confusion and False Voices
The Bible warns us to watch out for false prophets, and that warning still stands. If a voice is stirring fear, pride, or control, pause. Is that truly God? Or is it something else? We test the spirits by the Word of God (1 John 4:1). We ask for peace and clarity in the given situation. We remember the Shepherd’s voice is familiar to His sheep.
Hearing God takes time. It takes trust. It takes surrender. But your own life — every corner of it — is worth that kind of divine conversation. He wants to walk with you. Lead you. Love you into greater obedience.
So draw near. Stay near. And remember: God’s direction will always lead to peace, even when the path ahead looks unknown.

Anna Barbour
Hey there, my name is Anna, and I am so excited to share Keep It Simple Anna Sue with you. I am a wife, mother of two young men, and currently in a pre-empty nester season of life. God knew I needed blogging way before I did. Being a pre-empty nester has left me with…extra time. I decided to use that time for creativity and for helping others to see that if I can do it, they can do it too. Learn more about me.

Thank you so much for this post. I have a devotional coming up that I need to give and was asking the Lord for guidance. This week I have read at least two articles on hearing God speak. There are things that I have in mind and there are things from this and one other that I read that will help supplement those thoughts. Thank you for being faithful to the Word.
That makes my heart happy! I’m glad it was helpful and timely.
