10 Things I Stopped Doing to Keep My Home Running Smoothly

If your home feels harder to keep up with than it should, it might not be about doing more… it might be about stopping a few things that are quietly making everything more overwhelming.”

So today I’m sharing 10 things I stopped doing that made my home run so much more smoothly.

Letting go of these habits made a big difference in how my home functions day to day – but even more than that, I changed how I think about homemaking as a whole through daily life lessons.

Changes

None of these are big life changes—but together, they completely changed the rhythm of my home.

1.

I stopped letting laundry pile up

  • “I used to wait until I had huge loads…”
  • Now: small, frequent loads
  • Result: less overwhelming, easier to fold/put away

👉 Nothing derails a day faster than 4 loads staring at you.

2.

I stopped saving everything for the evening

  • Evenings used to feel exhausting
  • Now: doing small resets throughout the day

👉 I stopped relying on motivation at the end of the day.

3.

I stopped overcomplicating meals

  • Used to try new/complex meals constantly
  • Now: simple, repeat meals

👉 Simple meals = more consistency, less stress

4.

I stopped running to the store constantly

  • Impulse trips = wasted time + money
  • Now: plan ahead, use what you have

👉 My home feels calmer when I’m not always ‘running out’ for something

5.

I stopped overcommitting outside the home

  • Too many outings = home falls behind
  • Now: more margin in the week

👉 Every ‘yes’ outside the home affects what happens inside it

6.

I stopped letting small messes sit

  • Dishes, clutter, “I’ll do it later”
  • Now: quick resets

👉 Small messes turn into big ones faster than we think

7.

I stopped buying too much food

  • Overcrowded fridge/pantry = stress
  • Food waste

👉 Less food actually made meals easier

8.

I stopped waiting for the ‘perfect time’ to clean

  • Used to wait for a big cleaning block
  • Now: little bits throughout the day

👉 There is no perfect time—just small pockets of time

9.

I stopped keeping things I don’t use

  • Clutter = harder to manage home
  • Slowly simplifying

👉 The less I have to manage, the easier everything feels

10.

I stopped trying to do everything in one day

  • Burnout cycle
  • Now: rhythm over intensity

👉 Consistency matters more than doing it all at once

Why?

And honestly, I didn’t even realize how much these things were affecting my home until I stopped doing them.

Want to Give it a Try?

“None of this is about having a perfect home—it’s just about creating a home that feels easier to live in day to day.”

And for me, it wasn’t about adding more to my routine… it was about removing the things that were making it harder.
