5 Things I Do for Rest That Actually Keep My Home Calm
5 things I do for rest that actually keep my home calm have completely changed the way I move through my days as a homemaker.
For a long time, I think many of us were told that rest looked like sitting down, checking out, or scrolling for a few minutes in between everything else. And while I’ve never been someone who spends a lot of time on my phone, I have had those moments where I sit down for a minute or two… and walk away feeling like I didn’t actually rest at all.
It didn’t recharge me.
It didn’t clear my mind.
And it didn’t help my home feel any calmer.
Over time, I started to realize something different:
Rest isn’t something I escape to.
It’s something I build into my day in simple, steady ways.
And as I’ve continued simplifying my home and routines—especially as I’ve worked through things I needed to let go of (like in my post on 10 things I stopped doing to keep my home peaceful)—this idea of true rest has become even clearer.

Simple Meals That Remove Decision Fatigue
One of the biggest ways I actually feel rested each day is through keeping meals simple.
Breakfast is almost always the same—something like two eggs. It fuels my body, it’s easy, and there’s no extra thinking involved.
Dinner is planned just a few nights each week, often with a crockpot meal or by doubling recipes so we have leftovers for the next day.
Because for me, rest looks like not constantly having to decide what’s next.
If this is something you’re trying to simplify too, I’ve put together a simple Evening Routine Printable Pack that helps take the guesswork out of an evening reset. It’s linked here for you so you can use it in your own home.

Small Daily Tasks (Hills, Not Mountains)
Rest, for me, also looks like staying on top of the little things.
Keeping surfaces clear.
Letting laundry move through the house consistently.
Freshening bathrooms as I go.
I always think of it as choosing to tackle the hills instead of the mountains.
Because when things stay manageable, I don’t feel overwhelmed—and that feeling of calm is what actually allows me to rest.
This shift really started to click as I continued simplifying and letting go of more unnecessary pressure (which I shared more about in 10 more things I no longer do as a homemaker).

Choosing Quiet Over Noise
When I do sit down, I want it to give something back to me.
Reading has become one of the most restful parts of my day. It slows my thoughts, gives my mind something meaningful to focus on, and allows me to step away without feeling drained.
You can travel the world through a book, sit in quiet, and actually enjoy the moment.
It’s a completely different kind of rest than the kind that leaves you feeling like time just slipped away.
Fresh Air and Gentle Movement
Rest doesn’t always mean being still.
Sometimes it looks like:
- stepping outside
- going for a short walk
- sitting on the porch
- letting the sun hit your face
Homemaking requires so much mental energy, and giving your brain space to breathe—even for a few minutes—can make a noticeable difference in how your home feels afterward.

Preparing Ahead to Create Peace Later
One of the most practical ways I build rest into my life is by thinking ahead just a little.
Putting dinner in the crockpot early in the day
Planning a few meals for the week
Keeping simple snacks like fruit, yogurt, and nuts on hand
Because rest isn’t just about the moment you’re in—it’s about removing stress before it ever shows up.
And that’s something I didn’t fully understand until I started simplifying more areas of my home and routines.
What Rest Actually Looks Like as a Homemaker
What I’ve learned is this:
Rest isn’t found in one big moment.
It’s not a full day away.
And it’s not completely checking out from your life.
It’s built quietly into your days through:
- simple routines
- small consistent actions
- and choosing what truly gives something back
And as I’ve continued to let go of things that didn’t serve my home (like I shared in 10 things that make your home feel cluttered even when it’s clean), I’ve realized that rest and a peaceful home really go hand in hand.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed…
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or like you’re constantly needing a break, it might not be that you need more time away…
It might just be that you need a different kind of rest.
One that supports your home.
One that supports your mind.
And one that helps you show up in a way that feels calm, steady, and sustainable.
